Emerald Ash Borer

The emerald ash borer is a bright green beetle. It is about 1/3 of an inch long. The borer will lay its eggs in cracks, fissures, and holes in the bark of the tree. When the eggs hatch, the larvae get down into the bark and into the heart of the tree. They then spend the next one to two years munching on the tree before they emerge as adults, breed, and start the process all over again. The ash borer is an invasive insect to the US. They started out in northeastern Asia, including places like Mongolia. Because they are a non-native species, they don't have any natural predators, which can allow them to spread quickly and to kill adult trees. However, managing and eradicating the beetles is possible.

One thing that you can do is to put some pesticides down around your area. Those pesticides include substances like imidacloprid. This chemical messes with the borer's central nervous system, which kills them. Generally, you put this in the soil around your trees. Many products that carry this pesticide require a yearly application. Others will require a more frequent application. Make sure to check the instructions on the pesticide so that you apply it as often as you should be doing.

You can also call in a professional and have them come take a look at your trees. They will be able to take a close look at your tree and decide whether or not it's emerald ash borers that are damaging your trees. Then they can do things like put injections into the trunk of the tree. That can help to get rid of the larvae and help kill anything that has already gotten a foothold in your tree.
