3 Things Homeowners Should Be Watching For In Their House

As a homeowner there are many things you should be doing to make sure that you are protecting your home. You should be checking the gas line, watching the water use to make sure there are no leaky pipes and much more. One of the most important things you should be watching is the electrical use. If there is a potential problem with the electrical wiring in your house, you could be at risk for a house fire or electrocution. Here are some signs that the electrical wiring in your house needs upgrading.

1. You Don't Have GFCIs in The House

GFCI sockets are incredibly important in the house. These sockets are specifically designed to be able to handle water. If water gets into the socket it can cause electrocution, so you need to be sure that the socket has a way to turn off if it is exposed to water. Normal sockets are not able to do this, so you need to have at least one GFCI in places where there is any water. In all the bathrooms you should GFCI sockets as well as in the kitchen. If you have a pool there should be sockets there and in the basement where you are prone to flooding.

If you do not have the proper amount or proper placement of GFCIs in your home you should call an electrician about getting your house upgraded.

2. You Don't Have Enough Electrical Sockets

Another important thing is to make sure that you have enough electrical sockets installed so that you aren't using extension cords throughout the house. If you find that you are hiding electrical cords under the rugs, behind the furniture, and around the house so that you can plug in things like lamps, TV, and appliances, this is a problem. The concern is that the extension cords can get damaged and could spark and cause a house fire. It is much safer to have the lamp or appliance plugged straight into the wall. If you aren't able to do that, you need to talk to an electrician about installing more sockets in the house.

3. Your House Keeps Tripping

Lastly, if your house is continually tripping you have a problem. The electricity will trip when there is too much power surging. Thus, if you keep having the problem it means you are constantly dealing with too much electricity, which can be very dangerous.

By looking out for these things you can make sure you are protected. For more information, talk to a professional like All American Air & Electric, Inc.
